I moved to the Unites States four years ago. Coming to the U.S. was both exciting and stressful at the same time. Having to learn a new language, culture, and customs was overwhelming, but I knew the opportunity would allow me to pursue my dream of becoming a successful businessman. Thus, I spend the majority of my time expanding my knowledge. For example, I spend a great deal of time learning accounting programs and researching websites such as WileyPlus and CalCPA. I also lend my time at the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program to help low-income citizens file their tax returns.

In addition to the above I also work at NOCCCD’s School of Continuing Education as an hourly student. My responsibilities include administering government standardized tests and registering students for ESL classes. Besides, I also participated in some extracurricular activities with EOPS, such as the Lung Force Walk and Shoebox project. Additionally I was able to visit various universities with the EOPS program to explore my transfer options. Finally, I teach Vietnamese at the temple to preserve my culture to the upcoming generation.

Lastly, I am dealing with our family’s financial crisis due to the recent passing of my mother. Last year, my mother was battling stage 4 breast cancer until recently when she lost her battle. Overtime, my brothers and I worked tirelessly to provide her with her medical needs and unfortunately for her funeral services. The scholarship will be a great source of financial support in continuing my pursuit of my education at this difficult time.
