YAREL VALDEZ

I am graduating from Gavilan College and preparing to transfer to CSUMB. It is a bittersweet moment, however I am prepared for what the future holds for me academically. I am a first-generation college student and one of four kids. Like others, I've had my fair share of obstacles not only financially but recently having lost my dad. My father was one of my biggest supporters when it came to my education. This experience nearly steered me away from my goals and was definitely a heavy time in my 21 years of life. Nevertheless, lessons were learned and I continue to always keep moving forward.

My long term goal is to become an optometrist and research optic nerve disorders.

EOPS, has been the foundation of my academic success. I am extremely grateful to have been a member of such an amazing program. Each semester I was fortunate enough to receive a book voucher, early registration, academic counseling, and overall support to pursue a higher education. The program is helping me one last time by providing a scholarship that will help me pay for my transfer fees.

I personally want to thank Simone Reyes. She was the best and most helpful counselor. Simone, really cares for her students and goes the extra mile to ensure a student is properly assisted. Any future students at Gavilan College are in good hands with her as their counselor.
