CHANTALLE ALLEN
Merritt College

My journey began at Merritt in 2016. However, in 2017, I lost my father to a stroke and my brother was gunned down as well. I became the custodian of my brother’s children. All the while I was working and going to school full-time. The children were wonderful, but the situation was difficult and I had to delay my schooling. Finally, this year, I came back to school. I earned a 3.5 GPA (Spring), and a 4.0 GPA (Summer).

I want to pursue a career in Social Work. I feel I must show my family and myself that no matter what we go through, we must remain focused and put our trust in God to make all things possible. My children are doing exceptionally well in school.

EOPS and the college have helped me in so many ways, assisting me with my educational goals. The staff is so supportive and caring. EOPS assures me that I am not alone on this journey. I see clear evidence that there are people in this world who are genuine and really want students to succeed. It is amazing. In so many ways if it wasn’t for EOPS and my family I would have given up a long time ago.

Now, I am set to graduate from Merritt College in May 2020, I plan on attending SF State University’s School of Social Work or Cal State East Bay to major in Sociology. After receiving my bachelor’s, I will attend graduate school to pursue my master’s.
