Sombo Chet is an undergraduate student at the University of California, Berkeley. Prior to her acceptance, she studied at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, California. She is a first-generation college student and single mother of two teenage boys - fifteen and thirteen years old. She grew up in poverty and faced numerous challenges during her upbringing. Based on her own personal experiences and research, she recognizes that education is a primary lifeline out of poverty. She graduated with three AA degrees with highest honors distinction maintaining a 4.0 cumulative grade point average. She was one of fourteen students to earn that distinction from the 2018 graduating class of over 1,800 students. In addition, the Academic Senate and the Counseling & Special Services Division recognized her as an outstanding student in 2017. Sombo is co-founder of a non-profit organization called Guycambo Inc., which specializes in providing sustainable educational services and support of children in unserved communities in her native country of Cambodia. She is working towards attending law school after completing her undergraduate studies from UC Berkeley - her specific objective is to study human rights and immigration law. When Sombo isn't excelling in her academic studies, you can always find her spending time with her family and hanging out with her teenage boys.
